APRA boosts research unit

APRA boosts research unit

(23 November 2004 – Australia) The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has beefed up its in-house research team with three new appointments. Former University of New South Wales senior lecturer in banking and finance, Dr Neil Esho, has been named as the regulator’s new head of research.

Professor Ian Sharpe has joined APRA as a senior research fellow. Professor Sharpe is currently Emeritus Professor and Honorary Visiting Professor at UNSW and will continue in these roles.

The third appointee, Dr Wilson Sy, is joining APRA as principal researcher. Dr Sy has extensive expertise in the private, government and academic sectors.

APRA said the move was part of its strategy to build on its role as central repository of financial information and that it was looking to become the leading source of applied prudential research.

APRA chairman John Laker said applied research was critical in helping APRA identify risk issues that could occur.

"APRA’s recent applied research has been a significant input into the strengthening of the prudential framework for housing lending and for lenders mortgage insurance, and in understanding the factors affecting the performance of superannuation funds," he said.
