Australia Post moves to expand services

(8 December 2010 – Australia) Australia Post has said it is planning to expand on its current range of financial services, however has rejected claims that it will become a bank in the near future. Australia Post’s chairman, David Mortimer, told the Australian newspaper that the organisation will be adding more financial services to its offerings next year, including superannuation.

Over the past decade mail volumes have significantly decreased, forcing Australia Post to offer other services at its 4,500 retail locations nationwide, including car insurance.

The organisation also has a agreement in place with National Australia Bank, which offers the banks business customers the alternative of depositing cash and cheques at almost half of Australia Post’s outlets.

However, Mr Mortimer insisted in his interview with The Australian that Australia Post would not follow the lead of post offices in New Zealand and Japan by moving into the banking sector.

'We are completely unskilled in the area of banking, Mr Mortimer said.

Mr Mortimer said that Australia Post's future really lies in offering online financial services to customers, particularly in regional and rural areas, the report says.
