Barclaycard unveils mobile terminal

Barclaycard unveils mobile terminal

(18 February 2010 – Global) At the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona this week Barclaycard, Europe’s leading card issuer, has unveiled a system that enables smart phones to become chip and PIN payment terminals. The technology, aimed at small business owners like plumbers and electricians, will be officially launched before the end of this year following the completion of the pilot programme.

Users download an application onto their smart phone, which then acts as a virtual till.

Merchants can enter payment amounts or pre select from a price list, they can also offer customers discounts and loyalty programs.

Customers then enter their card and number, which interacts with a small Chip and PIN device, and can opt to have their receipt emailed or txt to them.

The application not only processes card payments, it allows merchants to record cash and cheque payments for convenient end of day balancing.

The system allows merchants to keep a hand held log of their transactions to view at anytime and can be accessed over a wider period of time.

Barclaycard’s managing director, global payment acceptance, Paul Cook said that they understand how important convenient, widely accepted and guaranteed payment is to small businesses and also how mobile phones play an integral role in their life and their business.

Developing a service which brings mobile and electronic card payments together in a simple compact solution illustrates how Barclaycard continues to develop innovations that make customers lives easier, Mr Cook added.
