BEN settles on new chief

(24 March 2009 – Australia) Bendigo and Adelaide Bank has announced its replacement chief executive to take over from July 2009, in internal candidate Mike Hirst. The bank appointed Mike Hirst as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer to succeed current chief Rob Hunt, effective 2 July 2009.

Mr Hirst currently holds the position of Chief Executive Retail Bank and has overall responsibility for the Bank’s retail business, group solutions and treasury.

He was selected ahead of another internal competitor for the job, Jamie McPhee, the former head of Adelaide Bank before the two banks agreed to a merger in 2007.

The former Managing Director of Adelaide Bank, Jamie McPhee was then appointed to the board of the merged group as Executive Director and given responsibility for the bank’s wholesale banking services.

When outlining his new role back in August 2007, the bank also indicated that McPhee would be the likely successor.

It said that with Mr Hunt’s retirement in July 2009, this will place Mr McPhee in an excellent position to succeed Mr Hunt. Bendigo has instead gone for its retail head, at a time when the bank is retail focused.

CEO-elect, Hirst, previously held the position of Chief Operating Officer, responsible for the bank’s retail banking business and product and service delivery. He joined the bank in July 2001.
