British Fintech Investment Catapults Forward - KPMG

(9 February 2022 – United Kingdom) British fintech investment topped a staggering US$37.3 billion in 2021, up strongly from US$5.2 billion in 2020 on the back of the standout London Stock Exchange (LSE) acquisition of Refinitiv and resurgent valuations across the sector.

Deal flow increased by over 25 percent to 601 according to a report by KPMG. Worldwide fintech investment expanded by 70 percent to over US$210 billion in 2021, powered by demand for digital assets, cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. Deals exploded for corporates based in the payments sector, increasing their share of global fintech investment to US$51.7 billion while a record US$30 billion was invested in blockchain and crypto offerings.

“2021 was an incredibly strong one for the UK fintech industry. The UK remains at the centre of European fintech investment with British fintechs attracting more funding than their counterparts in the rest of EMEA combined. Fintechs remain strategically important for the UK’s economic growth prospects and its vital that the ongoing work to nurture them continues if the UK is to remain a magnet for investment” stated KPMG UK and EMA Head of Financial Services, Karim Haji.
