Card skimming methodologies 'savvy'

Card skimming methodologies ‘savvy’

(9 April 2010 – Australia) The Australian police have warned consumers that card-skimming devices on EFTPOS machines are now so advanced that even people with knowledge of what to look out for can still be fooled. Two people were charged yesterday as part of a joint police operation targeting an organised syndicate compromising EFTPOS terminals in New South Wales and Queensland.

Operation Ice Hailstone (QPS operation name) was commenced in March to target an organised syndicate placing skimming devices inside EFTPOS terminals located in retail outlets in Queensland and New South Wales.

Acting Detective Inspector, Jon Strohfeldt of the Fraud and Corporate Crime Group said this latest arrest is just another reason for the community to exercise vigilance when conducting any financial transaction.

No matter how you look at it, identity theft and credit card fraud are on the rise. Offenders are becoming more savvy and are targeting ATMs and EFTPOS machines at an alarming rate, Mr Strohfeldt added.

The techniques and methodologies they are using are also more sophisticated than have ever been seen before in Australia, Mr Strotfeldt highlighted.

The Australian Police said in a statement that, in addition to this latest incident, they have seen over A$70 million dollars siphoned from personal accounts across Australia.
