CBA launches online ID confirmation

(15 September 2010 – Australia) New customers to Commonwealth Bank can apply online to open a transaction account, savings account or credit card using Electronic Customer Verification (ECV) which allows the bank to verify a customers’ identity in real-time, without the need to complete an ID check in branch. With the new online identification process, customers can be fully identified, complete their account application, receive an online banking ID and password and if applying for an everyday transaction or savings account, secure their account number without having to complete any further checks.

Commonwealth Bank’s executive general manager Direct Channels, Quentin Boyes, said that the introduction of online verification means the bank can identify new to bank customers electronically in real-time as part of a simplified online application process for the bank’s most popular transaction accounts, savings account or applying for a credit card.

CBA is one of the first banks in Australia to offer prospective customers this functionally and it demonstrates its commitment to offering superior customer service and to make it easier for customers to bank with us when it suits them, said Mr Boyes.

New customers enter identification information securely online, for example, drivers licence, passport, birth certificate and similar to assist in verifying their identity.

Commonwealth Bank will then confirm a new customers’ identity against various external sources. The customer will then be registered for NetBank and complete their account application. The entire process should take less than 10 minutes for transaction accounts.
