Citigroup launches handy new service

(6 May 2005 – Australia) Citigroup and Telstra have joined forces to launch a wireless banking service for the bank’s Australian customers. The service will be delivered using i-mode technology and will be available from Telstra to customers who have NEC, Samsung, Panasonic and Sagem mobile handsets.

Citigroup customers using the i-mode service can use their mobile phones to pay bills, transfer funds between accounts, view product information and receive information on stock prices, among other services.

Citigroup chief executive Les Matheson said some 10 million bills were paid each month in Australia using BPAY and that people had become comfortable paying bills online.

"Paying bills via mobile is a natural and perhaps even more convenient extension and we have created a safe environment in which to do it," he said.

The bank said research showed 25 percent of mobile phone users would use mobile banking services to pay bills, with another 24 percent saying they would be happy to transfer funds via their hand sets.
