Fake ABA operator undertaking survey

Fake ABA operator undertaking survey

(19 October 2009 – Australia) The Australian Banker’s Association (ABA) has warned consumers about an imposter calling claiming to be from the group completing a survey. The bogus telephone operator is calling people and requesting they partake in a survey about banking providers and proceeds to ask questions.

The questions include, whom do you bank with, how long have you banked with them and are you satisfied with the service.

The operator claims to be conducting the survey on behalf of the Australian Banking Association, with one clear distinction that it is a bogus call; the group is actually called the Australian Banker’s Association.

The ABA was alerted to the hoax survey when two customers called became suspicious after the calls were terminated part way through.

David Bell, Chief Executive of the ABA, said that, the ABA does not carry out customer satisfaction surveys.

The ABA is concerned, however, that if the calls had continued, the customers would have been asked for personal identification details including bank account numbers, PINs and Internet banking passwords and logins. The criminals which are running this scam could then use the information to defraud bank customers, Mr Bell added.

The ABA are warning consumers that they are not completing any bank satisfaction survey and that consumers should ignore any telephone calls, e-mails or text messages that suggest otherwise, Mr Bell concluded.
