Goldman to start China indices

(China) - US investment bank Goldman Sachs has announced plans to publish its own monthly index of Chinese economic activity. The move follows growing concern about the accuracy of official figures, which some analysts claim exaggerate growth figures by up to 4 percent in bad years.

Goldman, for example, estimates that China's GDP growth for 1998 was 4 percent, not the officially published 7 percent.
