HSBC combines CIO and COO

(3 October 2008 – Global) HSBC has announced the creation of the role of Chief Technology and Services Officer in order to ensure the integration of technology and operations within the business. The new position combines the previous roles of Chief Information Officer and Group Chief Operating Officer.

Ken Harvey, the current chief information officer, has been appointed to the newly created position with effect from 1 October 2008.

Harvey joined HSBC in 1989 and has over 25 years technology and operations experience. He becomes a Group Managing Director and joins the Group Management Board.

Current chief operating officer, David Hodgkinson will retire at the end of the year after 39 years with HSBC.

HSBC said that the integration of technology and operations seeks to drive the transformation of both customer experience and efficiency within the business.

Michael Geoghegan, group chief executive of HSBC, said that by combining their technology and worldwide operations more closely the banking group can re-engineer customers' experience of HSBC and at the same time drive down the unit cost of production.
