HSBC sees opportunities in Australia

(17 March 2016 – Australia) HSBC Holdings, which has expanded its Australian capital financing team more than eightfold since the Global Financial Crisis, says there are opportunities in the nation as China shifts its investment focus from resources.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the bank’s head of capital financing, James Dynon said: "The focus has moved to infrastructure, real estate, agriculture, health and food security."

He added that Chinese companies are looking beyond the mainland to "continue their growth story, and Australia is a big part of that."

HSBC has hired bankers in project finance and debt capital markets, Mr Dynon said. The expansion included the appointment of former UBS Group banker Scott Couzner mid-2015 to the new position of head of Australian M&A.

According to Bloomberg, purchases of Australian assets involving Chinese companies almost doubled to a record A$8 billion in 2015 from a year earlier.
