M-banking sparks US interest

(15 September 2008 – USA) Research in the USA has shown that an increased amount of US customers are interested in mobile banking. According to research released by financial technology vendor Fiserv, around 75 percent of US mobile phone customers would consider using mobile banking if it was offered to them.

This figure shows a significant rise in interest in mobile banking and payments services, and a large jump from the 49 percent of mobile phone users recorded in 2006.

Fiserv said that when surveyed in 2006, use of mobile phones for financial activities was virtually no existent. But the latest study found that 23 percent of respondents are currently using a mobile device to access account and credit card balances.

Bob Homer, vice president of product management for Fiserv electronic banking services said that consumers perceive the value of accessing financial services on their mobile devices as a convenient way to interact with their financial institution.

Security is, however, still a concern, with 72 percent of survey respondents saying that they worry about the security of accessing financial data using wireless devices. Cost is also a major issue with nearly half of all respondents.
