Macquarie adds to board’s skill base

(23 March 2010 – Australia) Macquarie Group Limited has announced the appointment of Michael Hawker to the investment bank’s board. David Clarke, Macquarie Group’s chairman said, in a statement yesterday, that Mr Hawker would join the board as an independent non-executive director.

The newest member of the board will remain based in London, but will travel regularly to Australia to attend the group’s board meeting, the bank said in a statement.

Mr Hawker’s career includes 11 years for the lender Citibank, working in both Australia and the United Kingdom, he worked as deputy managing director for Australia and subsequently, executive director, head of derivatives, Europe, also playing a part in Citibank’s European senior management team.

Mr Hawker then joined Westpac in Sydney where his roles included general manager, Financial Markets and group executive, Business and Consumer Banking.

More recently, Mr Hawker was the CEO and managing director of Insurance Group Australia from 2001 to 2008.

Mr Hawker currently serves as a director of Aviva Plc Group, the largest insurance provider in the UK and the Australian Rugby Union.

Macquarie Group’s chairman, David Clarke, said that the board would benefit greatly from Mr Hawker’s experience and knowledge of the financial services industry and represents an important addition to the skill base of Macquarie’s board.
