MasterCard, Westpac launch debit card JV
(12 September 2006- Australia) Westpac has partnered with MasterCard to launch a debit card in the Australian market place.
Westpac general manager of Product and Marketing, Tim Harrington, said the offering was developed in response to customers wanting an access card with the same functionality as a credit card but with the "choice to use money from their own transaction account".
"Because the Westpac Debit MasterCard is available on our existing transaction accounts, customers can choose the account that best suits their needs while taking advantage of the added flexibility of a Debit MasterCard," he said.
MasterCard said the launch of the new debit card was part of its ongoing strategy to collaborate with member banks to "help consumers of all ages manage their finances effectively".
