Millions left without wages due to glitch

(18 April 2011 – Australia) The lead up to Easter is not the best time for a computer glitch to leave millions of employees without wages, but that is exactly what happened late last week to National Australia Bank customers. About 100 NAB branches throughout the country were opened in the weekend after delays in payroll processing affected NAB’s own customers as well as other businesses and banks.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia, ANZ, St George Bank and Bank South Australia said their customers were affected by the glitch.

NAB was in the process of crediting customers’ accounts, with other banks’ affected accounts restored overnight.

The bank alerted customers to the issue via social networking website Twitter and its website. 'Some NAB customers' account balances may not be up-to-date this AM,' NAB posted on Twitter early on Friday. 'We are investigating the issue & will update ASAP.'

The meltdown affected workers whose employers use NAB and associated banks for their payroll. It has also impacted payrolls processed by NAB on behalf of other banks, including Macquarie Bank, HSBC, Citibank, Bank of Scotland and UBS.

NAB spokeswoman Meaghan Telford said the bank was trying to fix the problem and understood and regretted any inconvenience caused to customers.
