Money frozen, but abuse flows

(16 December 2011 — Australia) Commonwealth Bank Australia (CBA) customers were left without access to their money after an unexplained glitch resulted in hundreds of dollars being wiped from accounts. People were unable to withdraw money from ATMs, some even having their cards eaten by machines, there was no luck at Eftpos or even access to online banking for hours on Wednesday night.

CBA said the glitch related to "network connectivity problems" but has no further details. On exactly the same day last year, the exact same glitch happened.

Customers were forthcoming with abuse on the banks Facebook page.

During the outage several said they were unable to pay for their groceries, dinner or public transport tickets home.

"Christmas shopping and can’t access MY money," wrote one Facebook user.

Another wrote: "Went to ATM and got told they had prohibited access to my card then there’s no1 answering the phones."

Some reported having hundreds of dollars missing from their accounts.

Many said they could not get through to CBA’s call centre.

Late on Wednesday night CBA issued a statement which said services had been restored.

'Customers may still be experiencing issues accessing our contact centres and phone banking,' the bank said.
