NAB finds new retail head at St George

(3 December 2004 – Australia) After finding rich pickings among senior management at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank has succeeded in prising away St George Bank’s group executive of retail banking, Andrew Thorburn. Thorburn will head NAB’s new retail banking division, reporting directly to CEO Ahmed Fahour. He will also sit on the bank’s Australian Executive Committee.

Thorburn started his banking career with ASB Bank in Auckland and was eventually appointed chief manager of Personal Banking in 1992. He then joined CBA – which owns ASB – and held key roles in personal banking, marketing and sales and service.

NAB has also promoted Gordon Lefevre to deputy group chief financial officer, reporting to group CFO Michael Ullmer. Lefevre will join the bank’s Group Executive Committee.

Former group chief risk officer Graeme Willis has been named group general manager of Regulatory Affairs, a newly created role within the bank. Willis was chief operating officer of NAB’s UK based Clydesdale Bank before becoming chief credit officer in 1998.

The bank has also promoted Gavin Slater to executive director of the bank’s European business, where he will report to Lynn Peacock.
