Positive reaction to m-payments

(9 July 2008 – Europe) A French m-payments pilot has received high rates of customer satisfaction during a wide-scale contactless mobile payments trial last year. The trial, run by a consortium of French banks, telecommunications companies and technology vendors reported customer satisfaction ratings of above 90 percent for the scheme.

The high satisfaction rating is an indicator of the potential widespread success of m-payments and a successful model to use in mobile payments.

The consortium running the pilot said that the trial would contribute to the definition of an international standard within the future single euro payments area (Sepa).

Studies by the consortium showed that customers cite an all-in-one approach and ease of use as the most popular features of the mobile payments system.

Around 1000 customers and 200 sales outlets were recruited to participate in the pilot. Participants could make payments of less than 20 Euros by tapping their handsets against specially designed terminals.

The consortium that launched the pilot includes French banks BNP Paribas, Groupe Crédit Mutuel-CIC, Crédit Agricole and LCL, Groupe Caisses d'Epargne, La Banque Postale and Société Générale as well as mobile operators Bouygues Telecom, Orange and SFR.

MasterCard and Visa are involved in the programme, along with handset manufacturers LG, Motorola and Sagem and eftpos vendors Ingenico and Sagem Monetel. Gemalto and Oberthur Card Systems were chosen to provide SIM cards and an application management platform for the pilot.
