RBS supports single parents

RBS supports single parents

(11 December 2009 – UK) A survey conducted by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and a leading single parents charity has revealed that only eight percent of single parents receive personal finance advice. The single parents charity, Gingerbread, tapped into 1000 of its members to conduct the joint research with RBS, after over 55 percent of parents making calls to the charity’s free single parents helpline did so due to financial worries.

Despite only eight percent of the parents sampled having actually received some form of financial guidance, a further 42 percent said they would like to receive personal advice on budgeting and managing money.

The duo has released a free tailored money guide, MoneySense, after the research found that the need for money advice is more acute in the recession as single parents struggle to cope with higher food and fuel prices and childcare costs.

The MoneySense guide includes pointers on checking tax, benefits and other entitlements, on minimising bills, spreading current costs and planning for the future. It also contains a easy-to-use pro-forma Budget Planner.

The booklet offers ideas for making budgeting a family exercise and there’s sound advice on borrowing sensibly and on seeking guidance as soon as money problems arise. The guide is peppered with single parents’ own Top Tips and there’s a list of useful organisations for easy reference.

Sharon McDowall, head of community investment, RBS, said that the guide is part of the MoneySense financial education programme, which has been running for 15 years, and is tailored to the needs of single parents in these challenging economic times.
