September quarter CPI figures released

(27 October 2011 – Australia) The consumer price index (CPI), the key measure of inflation rose by 0.6 percent in Australia in the September quarter. The annual inflation rate was reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) at 3.5 percent, the mean CPI rose 0.3 percent in the September quarter for an annual growth rate of 2.3 percent data from ABS showed.

The weighted median CPI rose 0.3 per cent in the September quarter, for an annual rise of 2.6 per cent.

The Australian dollar fell by more than half a US cent after weaker than expected inflation figures.

Prior to the data's release at 1129 AEDT, the local currency was trading at 104.32 US cents, down from 104.56 cents on Tuesday.

Shortly after the ABS published its consumer price index (CPI) figures, the unit fell to be 103.77 US cents at 1132 AEDT.
