Standard Bank jumps on blog bandwagon

(5 November 2009 – Global) South Africa-based Standard Bank has followed the UK’s First Direct Bank among others in setting up its own blog site for customers to submit ideas. Customers have already started posting comments for new tools like a progress tracker for home loan applications, small business networking facility and a much called for change to the ‘boring and annoying’ call centre music.

Other customers can view the comments, add their own point of view and vote for the ideas.

The UK’s First Direct Bank, an HSBC subsidiary, recently introduced Talking Point and has said it has been seen as an innovative and refreshing step.

However, other banks like the Bank of America have specifically asked people not to contact it with their ideas.

The bank’s ‘unsolicited idea submission policy’ says, Bank of America and its associates do not accept or consider unsolicited ideas, including ideas for new or improved products, processes or technologies, product enhancements, advertising and marketing campaigns, promotions or new product names.

The bank then follows up by saying, however if despite our request not to send us your ideas, you still do, then regardless of what your communication states, the following terms shall apply to your idea submission. You agree that: (a) your ideas will automatically become the property of Bank of America, without compensation to you, (b) Bank of America can use the ideas for any purpose and in any way, and (c) any information you provide will be considered non-confidential.
