Sumitomo Mitsui Card partnering with Malaysia’s Soft Space

(16 January 2017 - Asia) Sumitomo Mitsui Card is partnering with a Malaysian payment startup as part of a foray into Southeast Asia, where the Japanese credit card company soon hopes to take its core business.

Soft Space offers payment services and hardware to businesses in 10 markets including Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Products include credit card readers for smartphones and order management systems for restaurants.

Sumitomo Mitsui Card will work with Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group to introduce Soft Space offerings to partner businesses and financial institutions. The Japanese company plans to become a licensed credit card company in Malaysia, issuing Soft Space-compatible cards and recruiting participating retailers.
