Visa opens new data centre

Visa opens new data centre

(18 November 2009 – USA) A new Visa centre located in the Eastern US has been opened to support multiple authorisation engines and process hundreds of millions of transactions each day. The centre, capable of handling more than 10,000 transaction messages per second, completes a global network of four data centres and connects more than 16,000 financial institutions.

The total volume for the firm, for the year ending 30 June 2009, was nearly US$4.3 trillion and is expected to grow due to the world moving away from cash to electronic payments, Visa said.

The new centre started processing transactions after Visa’s annual ‘stress testing’ of its network on the IBM facility and adds to the two synchronised data centres in North America; the centres have the ability to carry the entire global payment network in the event of a natural disaster.

The company has also made use of the IBM System Z Transaction Processing Facility to speed up processing power of the Visa Integrated Payment platform.

Mike Dreyer, chief information officer, Visa, said that the company’s commitment to continuous technology upgrades differentiates the group from competitors and helps Visa play a key role in facilitating the migration to electronic payments.

Few people recognise the critical role VisaNet plays in supporting the extensive brand acceptance, securing products and facilitating payment innovation, Mr Dreyer added.
