ANZ plans to shift away more jobs

ANZ plans to shift away more jobs

(8 April 2010 – Australia) ANZ has announced plans to shift around 100 jobs away from the bank’s Australian and New Zealand operations to a new back office processing centre in the Philippines. The new processing centre will be located in Manila, employing around 300 local staff.

The revelation of the bank’s plans to move more jobs overseas has been met with outrage from the Finance Sector Union (FSU),who is calling on the government to step in and protect Australian interests.

FSU national secretary, Leon Carter said that finance workers deserve a government prepared to put up some road blocks to stop banks like ANZ sending more and more jobs abroad.

They need to show a commitment to better banking, and investment in Australian jobs and skills, so jobs can be grown here as well as abroad, Mr Carter added.

The union highlighted that of the big four ANZ is the most aggressive offshorer, with approximately 3,500 jobs already located at the bank’s Bangalore operation in India.

The union also said it fears that the addition of Manila for processing operations reflects ‘an acceleration of a race to the bottom on labour costs’.
