Bank awards keep on coming

(5 June 2009 – Australia) Another round of awards in banking has been presented, with Money Magazine awarding its version of ‘best of’ for 2009. The top banking gong went to Westpac this year, named bank of the year by the magazine. Westpac also picked up the award for best Business Bank of the year.

Now in its fifth year, Money's Consumer Finance Awards gives a major award each year to what they rate as the top bank, credit union and building society.

While Westpac took out the bank award, the top credit union was Community Alliance Credit Union and the top building society went to IMB.

The magazine said that this was Westpac’s first win, with four different winners over the past five years.

The prize for home lender of the year for 2009 went to Westpac’s recent acquisition, St George, awarded for what was dubbed an extensive package of loans.

ANZ was knocked off their perch in this category, which it had occupied for 10 years, stretching back to before Money Magazine was involved.

There are three major awards and ten category awards in Money Magazine’s annual awards.

The awards were chosen by a Cannex analyst and the magazine, while institutions had to answer a questionnaire addressing the particular areas for certain categories. Money Magazine then receives these submissions for each category to make the judgement.

Other categories include: Credit Card Issuer, Money Minder, Non-Bank Lender, Socially Responsible Bank, Personal Lender, Margin Lender, Banking Website and Readers Choice: Service Excellence.
