Barclays continues contactless rollout

Barclays continues contactless rollout

(5 June 2009 – UK) UK payment provider, Barclaycard, announced a continued evolution towards contactless credit cards, increasing its roll out of the contactless enabled cards technology. Barclays announced that, through its payments provider unit, customers who receive a new, reissued or replacement Gold or Classic branded Barclaycard will now receive a card with the new technology integrated.

Contactless enabled cards can be used at a growing number of outlets throughout the UK including a host of independent retailers.

Recent research from Barclaycard showed that 98 percent of contactless cardholders believe that contactless payments are easy to use and 88 percent claimed that it enabled them to cut down the amount of time they would usually take to buy items such as a coffee.

Amer Sajed, managing director UK Cards, Barclaycard, predicted that in three years, the bank will have an additional four million customers who will be able to make payments using their contactless card.

Barclaycard currently has almost two million cards in circulation that can be used to make contactless payments.

The contactless cards market has most notably progressed in the US, while Barclaycard was a pioneer in the technology in the UK. Contactless technology in the UK allows secure payment for goods and services of £10 and under without the need to enter a PIN or signature.
