BOQ to host “Future of Fintech” hackathon

(3 March 2017 – Australia)  Bank of Queensland will this week host more than 130 aspiring entrepreneurs at a fintech hackathon.

The event is being staged from 3-5 March at Q-Labs in Brisbane.

The bank’s group executive and chief operations, digital and information officer, Donna-Maree Vinci, said: “Hackathon’s are a fantastic way of fostering an innovative culture within Brisbane’s community.

“The fact that the event has more than double last year’s registration numbers just shows how interest in the fin-tech industry is expanding.

“It’s incredible to watch participants build their ideas and solutions with like-minded, passionate people over a very short period of time.”

Participants will be judged by a panel of experts, potentially winning A$10,000 and a one-hour mentoring session with River City Labs founder Steve Baxter.

Along with Vinci, the judging panel comprised of Queensland’s first Chief Entrepreneur, Mark Sowerby; Ezidebit founder Michael Dempsey; Infocus COO Jo Willoughby; Entersoft co-founder and director Paul Kang; and Dr Pankaj Bhatt, global head professional services at Nucleus.

A study into the corporate engagement with fintechs found that in Australia, 17.6 percent of corporate treasurers have directly invested in fintechs, while 24.2 percent are looking at opportunities for investment in the fintech space. Additionally, Australian corporates said they planned to increase their current fintech investment by more than 12 percent this year.
