Goldman head rumoured to be next BOE Governor

(30 April 2012 – United Kingdom) Jim O'Neill, chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management has been touted as the next possible governor for the Bank of England (BOE), the Sunday Times reported. Mr O’Neill is widely known for his prominent economic thesis regarding the economically related nations referred to as BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China). He coined the phrase in a 2001 paper entitled 'The World Needs Better Economic BRICs.'.

Mr O’Neill refused to comment when asked about the report, which did not cite its sources.

A spokesman for the Treasury also declined to comment, but referred to a past statement by finance minister George Osborne that the search for a new Bank of England chief would not start in earnest until later in the year.

Mr O'Neill is known as one of the world's most famous economists with over a decade of experience at the world's most powerful investment bank, Goldman Sachs.

Governor Mervyn King is due to retire in June 2013.
