Liddy picks up exec award

(1 June 2009 – Australia) The CEO of a regional bank, Bank of Queensland, has won the Australian Banking and Finance award for top banking executive, in an environment dominated by the Big Four banks. Bank of Queensland managing director and CEO, David Liddy has been named Australia’s Financial Services Executive of the Year by Australian Banking & Finance Magazine.

The past year has been a tough one for regional banks like Bank of Queensland, in a market increasingly dominated by the big four banks.

Indeed, Liddy said in accepting the award that he believes the challenging economic environment has shown the strength of BOQ, particularly as a real alternative to the major banks.

Another major award to be given away by the magazine was the Australian Financial Institution of the Year, which was awarded to Westpac. Westpac also collected Chief Financial Officer of the Year, in Phil Coffey.

Of the foreign banks, Rabobank Australia won out, while another foreign bank, HSBC, won banking website/online offering of the year.

The innovative product of the year was the Loan Cover product by a combined AMP/Aussie, while advertising/marketing campaign of the year went to CBA for their debit MasterCard campaign.

CBA picked up two reader’s choice awards, best career development programme and best executive; chief executive Ralph Norris.

The awards were decided by a panel of expert judges from various banking and financial services industry participants.
