New MD for BNP Paribas Australasia
(17 August 2004 – Australia) BNP Paribas’s Australasian business has a new managing director in place with Francois Cristofari replacing Jean-Francois Varlet, who has returned to France after four years as Australian MD.
Cristofari was most recently deputy head of the bank’s Global Corporate Group and also head of the Corporate Group for Europe. He held a series of US based managerial appointments between 1983 and 1991, and was BNP Paribas’ head of Corporate Banking for North and South America.
In 1998 he was appointed head of Corporate Banking for France and was subsequently made head of Corporate Banking for Europe following the merger of Banque Nationale de Paris and Paribas.
Varlet’s tenure as MD was his second stint in Australia, having previously been Victorian manager for Banque National de Paris from 1983 to 1986.
He oversaw the bank through a turbulent period of restructuring, including the sale of the bank’s asset management arm to Wilson HTM, and retail division to Macquarie Equities. He presided over the purchase of global investment company Cogent from AMP for A$650 million in 2002.
BNP Paribas Australia posted its best ever result in 2003.
