St George pushes into WA

(25 July 2007 – Australia) St George Bank has opened a new branch in Fremantle, Western Australia, signalling a bigger into the retail and commercial markets in the state. The bank said business investment in Fremantle had increased significantly in the wake of 10.2 percent growth in the state in the year to March on the back of the resources boom.

St George plans to open five new branches in WA over the next month, including retail and commercial branches at Kewdale, Mandurah, Bunbury and Joondalup.

St George senior manager for the Fremantle branch Pieter Bergshoeff, said the new operation would service commercial hubs at Kwinana, O’Connor and Henderson.

He said Fremantle linked to all major arterials with A$18 billion of trade finance being traded through the port last year.

The bank’s general manager for WA Martin Barrett said St George’s geographical expansion into WA positioned it as an alternative to the major banks.
