WBC opens for business in the Gong

(2 July 2008 – Australia) Westpac has opened up its 19th specialist business banking centre in the past year with a new centre in Wollongong. Westpac has invested more than one million dollars in the new Business Banking Centre, which officially opened last week.

Westpac chief executive officer, Gail Kelly, said that the new centre demonstrated the Bank's commitment to providing more localised support.

She said that the support will provide for the continued growth and development of Wollongong and the Illawarra region, and the local businesses which support it. The centre will help support the growth of Westpac’s customers' businesses by providing a more personalised banking relationship.

Kelly added that Westpac now has 28 specialist business bankers servicing customers from Wollongong right down the South Coast and across to Nowra and the Southern Highlands.

Westpac's business bankers aim to offer customers with tailored advice on cash-flow, transactional banking, equipment finance and invoice financing. John Dryden, the Head of Westpac's Wollongong Business Banking Centre, said that the bank has recruited specialists in these areas for the centre.

The news comes amid speculation on the future of branches of Westpac and St George as a merged entity.

Kelly said that merger would further enhance the local banking presence in the region and that Westpac intends to retain the St George brand and branches and invest even further in front-line staff and services for customers.
