Bank customers warned of phone scam

(01 December 2010 – Australia) The Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) has warned bank customers of scammers posing as government officials conducting a survey, as complaints roll in. The phony official is calling claiming to be from the "Banking Association of Australia" purportedly carrying out a customer satisfaction survey.

The scammers then proceed to ask questions about who a customer banks with, how long they have been with the bank and whether they are satisfied with the service.

Steven Munchenberg, the chief executive of the ABA said that some of the bank customers had been asked for personal identification details.

'This information once extracted could be used by the criminals to commit crimes," Mr Munchenberg added.

The ABA does not carry out customer satisfaction surveys and anyone receiving such a call should hang up and not give away any details, Mr Munchenberg highlighted.

This is not the first time the ABA has received reports of this nature. In June and July of this a year a similar scam was underway.
