Johnson to up stumps at Macquarie

(13 March 2007 – Australia) The deputy chairman of Macquarie Bank Mark Johnson will retire from his executive responsibilities at the end of the month. Johnson, who is the second longest serving member of the Macquarie Bank board, will remain on the board until the bank’s annual general meeting in July.

He joined the bank via its predecessor Hill Samuel in 1971 as joint managing director with David Clarke. In those days the bank had 12 employees.

Following four years in Hill Samuel’s London office from 1977 to 1981, Johnson returned to became founding director of Australian Bank until 1986 before rejoining Macquarie as chairman of its Corporate Services Division. He was appointed to the board in February 1987.

Macquarie Bank chairman David Clarke said Johnson had made an outstanding contribution to both the bank and Australian business over the past 40 years.

"His contribution to the Macquarie Bank board has been immeasurable," he said.
